Primary Childrens Hospital Board approves bylaws to include APPs

The amendment to Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital’s bylaws to include Advance Practice providers (APPs, including Physician Assistants, Nurse Midwives and Nurse Practitioners) as medical staff members has been approved. Voting on the measure resulted in a greater than two-thirds vote by eligible medical staff physicians and was thereafter ratified on August 28 by the Primary Children’s Hospital Board of Trustees.

Effective immediately, all APPs credentialed at Primary Children’s Hospital are members of its medical staff.

APPs as medical staff members can:

  • Elect one APP representative to speak on behalf of APPs on the Medical Executive Committee (MEC)
  • Have voting rights in medical staff meetings and elections
  • Have fair hearing rights
  • Continue to serve on credentialing committees or other committees as currently constituted
  • Pay medical staff membership dues, assessed annually with all other medical staff members

APPs as medical staff members are not:

  • Eligible to become department chairs, division chiefs or medical staff officers
  • Granted admitting privileges (The bylaws changes allow for a pathway for APPs to obtain admitting privileges as approved by the MEC)
  • Able to grant themselves privileges outside of training and/or scope of practice

Thanks to Board and MEC for their support and collaboration with APPs to help deliver the best possible quality, safety and experience for our patients and providers.
