Shift differentials for evenings, nights, and weekends to increase by 5% starting April 3

Evening, night, and weekend shifts will receive a 5% increase to shift differential pay starting April 3, 2022 (pay period 8).
Shift Differentials

Caregivers who work these shifts and who are eligible for shift differential pay will see it reflected in their paychecks starting April 22.

  • Evening shift differentials are moving from 5% to 10%.
  • Night shift differentials are moving from 10% to 15%.
  • Weekend shift differentials are moving from 5% to 10%.

A shift differential is additional compensation paid for working outside of normal business hours. A recent market analysis conducted by the compensation team showed that shift differentials should be increased to match the rapidly evolving job market, and to incentivize caregivers for working outside of normal daytime business hours.

Here’s an example of how the increase will work: Jayne is a nurse. She works a shift on Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. 4 of those hours are in the evening shift differential timeframe—3:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.—which is increasing to a 10% differential starting April 3. On her timecard and pay slip, Jayne would see “Shift Diff Evening” in the amount of 4 hours.

“Our compensation philosophy is to pay caregivers a market-competitive wage for their job, and it encompasses all aspects of pay: base pay, incentive pay, and premium pay. Intermountain is a 24/7 business, and without caregivers working evenings, nights, and weekends, we wouldn’t be able to provide a high level of service to our communities. We’re grateful that we can increase the differential amounts to reward caregivers who take on these shifts,” says Heather Brace, senior vice president and chief people officer. “As we’ve shared before, the compensation team will continue to evaluate the labor market and make compensation adjustments as needed.”
