Two SelectHealth caregivers ensure a member has a crib for her new baby

A SelectHealth Community Care member who was pregnant and due within a week called in for some help last month. During the conversation, the member mentioned that she didn't have a crib for her baby. That's when Elizabeth Craig, Medicaid program manager, decided she wanted to help by donating a crib.

“I had a convertible crib/toddler bed that I’d used for my children and it was still in great condition, so I wanted it to go to a family in need,” Elizabeth says. “I’d been meaning to donate it to an organization that supports our underserved, but I hadn’t gotten a chance to do it yet with COVID-19. This seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

Elizabeth says she did a deep cleaning of the entire crib while wearing gloves and a facemask and checked with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission to make sure there weren’t any recalls on the crib. It was safe to donate.

The trick was the crib was in Salt Lake City and the member was in Layton — and the crib was too big to fit in a car. Due to the pandemic, the options to transport it were limited.

Elizabeth reached out to Greg Reid, SelectHealth’s community and public relations manager, to see if they could get access to the SelectHealth transit van. They also needed someone to drive the van. Amber Greene, a public relations specialist from Greg’s team, offered to clear her schedule and drive to Layton on her own time to drop off the crib.

Thanks to everyone's help, the crib was delivered to the member before her baby was born.

“I was more than happy to deliver the crib,” Amber says. “It was so nice to be a part of something uplifting and positive considering all that’s happening with COVID-19. I wasn’t able to be close to the member when I delivered it and there wasn’t really a chance to talk, but I could tell she was appreciative and was smiling.”

“Elizabeth and Amber are great examples of superior service and why SelectHealth is a great place to work,” says Russ Elbel, Medicaid program director. “We appreciate their willingness to assist one of our most vulnerable members in her time of need.”
