FOR LEADERS: Managing projects in a pandemic

ProjectsPandemic

The ways leaders work and lead have been impacted during COVID-19. Intermountain leaders are finding creative, new practices to meet the challenges and enhance productivity. Intermountain’s Leadership and Organizational Development team asked leaders to share some of their best tips:

  • Schedule weekly 30-minute virtual meetings. This allows everyone to have input and to keep projects top of mind and progressing.
  • Use the “planner” app in Microsoft Teams. This will help you set dates, keep notes, share team comments, and add attachments to specific tasks.
  • Ensure your project plan is up to date. Having a visual checklist with updates will help your project team stay on track.
  • Continually assess your priorities. Prioritize tasks and identify required dependencies.
  • Use time in between meetings. Between project meetings, write notes about next steps and make calendar appointments to keep things moving forward.
  • Provide virtual access to resources. Make sure your project team has access to everything they need. Host a “Team” on Microsoft Teams and store documents there to allow everyone on the team to have consistent messages, appointment schedules, view and edit documents at the same time, and chat in real-time.
  • Protect time for focused work by proactively blocking project ‘appointments’ and note what you intend to accomplish in that time. This can help prevent back-to-back meetings that leave little time for your to-do list.
