I was on my way to work at McKay-Dee Hospital when I noticed a van parked off to the side of the road in a weird way near the entrance. It was partially blocking the busy road at Country Hills Drive.

I pulled up behind in my personal truck and turned on my hazard lights. The female driver was in the driver’s seat looking distraught. As I approached her I could see a handicap child in the back seat who appeared to be having a seizure.

I introduced myself to the mother and told her I was there to help. At that point we noticed a Roy City Ambulance leaving the hospital. The mother flagged down the ambulance and the crew started treating the child. I went out into the intersection and started to direct traffic. I also called for another security unit to bring me the hospital security truck with flashing lights. An Ogden City Ambulance arrived soon after and took over care of the child, taking her to the ED at McKay-Dee. The mother stayed behind and let the ambulance crew know the medication her child needed before they left the scene.

Then she told me the reason she’d stopped at the intersection: She’d run out of gas. She was on her way to the ED when the car stopped running and she’d just coasted until she got out of the way. Hearing this, I was so glad I decided to stop and check on her. It’s what I would’ve done for anyone, but it made me realize how important it is to always check on people.

The mother let me know she was going to walk to Smith’s, which is a block or two away, to get some gas. That didn’t seem right to me with all she’d been through, so I insisted it would be much faster if I drove her. I then ran her back to her van and put the gas into it for her.

She couldn’t thank me enough for stopping and helping her. She was now able to drive herself to the ED and not have to worry about how she’d get home. I’m glad I could at least take that burden off her hands.
