COVID Surge Update for Riverton and Primary Children's

As Intermountain and other health systems prepare for an influx of COVID-19 patients, portions of the surge plan involving Riverton Hospital and Primary Children’s Hospital will be activated beginning Saturday, October 24.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Riverton Hospital will transition to provide inpatient care to adults only. Beginning October 24, Riverton will stop admitting pediatric patients to the 4th floor. The floor will become a temporary medical/surgical unit.
  • Pediatric inpatients at Riverton will be discharged over the next few days when caregivers will be ready to care for adult patients on the 4th floor.
  • For pediatric patients at Riverton requiring longer stays, transfers to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City may be initiated. The transfer process will be coordinated by the Intermountain Transfer Center.
  • All other pediatric care, including emergent care and outpatient services for children, will remain active at Riverton and the Primary Children’s Riverton building. Only inpatient pediatric services will be paused at Riverton. Our goal is to add capacity to care for COVID and non-COVID patients to avoid delaying elective cases related to hospital capacity.
  • Riverton’s pediatric caregivers have boldly accepted the challenge to be trained to care for adults to remain at Riverton and help with the surge.
  • The Primary Children’s Unit at Utah Valley Hospital will not change their operations at this time.
  • TOSH has also increased their bed capacity to care for additional patients. During the surge, other hospitals will implement additional strategies to continue to care for the needs of our community.
  • We encourage caregivers to sign up for ongoing text message communications about surge plans and other important information within your local facility. Ask your leader for instructions on how to sign up.
