How to tell the difference between the old and new yellow procedure masks

Intermountain is currently replacing the yellow procedure masks with new procedure masks, which are already available for EDs, ICUs, and ORs to order today. The replacement masks are also yellow. If your area still has both old and new procedure masks, here’s how you can tell the difference between the two masks:

The new yellow procedure mask:

  • Has “Level 1” on the outside of the mask along the nose wire, as well as printed on the box.
  • Is white on the back with an additional fabric on the back side.
  • Is a darker yellow color with a thin protective coating that you can see and feel.

The older yellow procedure mask that’s being replaced:

  • Has only one layer of fabric
  • Is yellow on the back
  • Doesn’t indicate Level 1 on the box or nose piece

The new replacement mask also has a more fibrous feel to it compared to the tissue-paper-like texture of the inner and outermost layers of our older masks. This is the characteristic caregivers may first notice when using the new mask for the first time.

Intermountain’s Supply Chain Organization is continuing to bring in these new masks based on our weekly allocation with the vendor. As additional masks arrive, the Supply Chain will work with Materials Management teams at your facilities to distribute the new masks as soon as possible. The initial distribution will be to high-risk departments.

Until the new masks arrive, please follow these guidelines while using the older procedure masks:

  • Examine your mask to make sure it’s in good condition and the loops are secure. If the structural integrity is questionable, swap the mask out and get a new one during your shift. You may need to change your mask more frequently if needed.
  • Wear a face shield instead of goggles to help protect your mask from moisture. Because these masks are made from a different material, they may be less fluid-resistant in certain situations than the previous masks. If there is a potential for fluid exposure, be sure to wear a face shield.

Please continue to use the older procedure masks in low-risk areas until enough new replacement masks are available.
