A man was staggering across the street outside Memorial Clinic in Salt Lake City, when Will Daines, MD, looked out his office window and saw the man collapse near the sidewalk. Dr. Daines, an internal medicine physician and the medical director for clinical operations at Castell, rushed outside and found the man unconscious and having difficulty breathing.

Dr. Daines, who happened have a stethoscope with him and was wearing a face mask, kneeled down to check on the man. “He was younger, probably in his 20s, and was kind of blue in the face and lips, but otherwise had a pulse,” he says.

Dr. Daines asked a few onlookers to watch the man while he hurried to his car to get a naloxone kit, just in case it was an overdose. A few years ago, he says, he used a naloxone kit in a similar situation on a patient in downtown Salt Lake and he’s kept a kit in his car ever since.

In this case, the person soon regained consciousness and Dr. Daines stayed with him until emergency responders arrived. Dr. Daines later found out the man had collapsed due to exhaustion after working multiple consecutive nights without sleep. He came to the clinic a few days later to talk about what happened and to thank Dr. Daines for the help.

“This is an amazing story that shows the kind of person Dr. Daines truly is,” says Bianca Alcazar, practice supervisor. “He cares for everyone and we wanted to recognize him for his superhero actions.”
