Amazon is known for delivering 2.5 billion packages a year, but they recently made a different kind of delivery to Primary Children’s Hospital: a $25,000 donation. Part of the donation, $10,000, is a “pay-it-forward” gift in honor of Daniela Petersen, an Amazon delivery driver who saved a life while delivering packages. The remaining $15,000 was donated by local Amazon employees at the close of last year.

Here’s Daniela’s story. Shortly after Daniela left Amazon’s American Fork delivery station to begin her shift a few days before Christmas, she noticed a woman frantically waving her arms. Daniela stopped and the woman asked if she knew CPR. Without hesitation, Daniela said “yes.” She followed the woman into a home and began performing CPR on another woman who wasn’t breathing. After two minutes, the woman took a huge breath. Family members standing nearby broke into tears. EMTs arrived to assist soon after.

Amazon recognized Daniela’s heroic efforts with a charitable gift that she could give to a deserving organization of her choice. She chose Primary Children’s Hospital. The donation will be used to support expressive therapies such as music, art, and dance, as well as School Zone—a program that helps patients and families keep in touch with teachers and schools—and patient assistance that helps normalize the hospital environment with therapeutic games, toys, crafts, and activities.

Katy Welkie, RN, Primary Children’s CEO and vice president of Intermountain Children’s Health, says Intermountain is grateful for the generous gift from Amazon and its ongoing partnership.
“We’re already putting Amazon’s gift to work to help children and their families feel more comfortable during their visit to Primary Children’s,” Katy says.

“Amazon is grateful for all that Primary Children’s Hospital does to provide world-class care and resources to children and their families,” says James Heaton, site leader of Amazon’s new sort center in Salt Lake City.
