Anna Mendoza, EVS technician, says her training prepared her to come to the rescue of someone suffering from chest pain.

A young man struggling in pain in a hallway at Primary Children’s Hospital recently was fortunate to have Ana Mendoza, an EVS technician, come to his aid. She proved a relentless advocate who wouldn’t give up until he got the help he needed.

Ana says she saw the young man in the hallway and could tell he was feeling sick. He was there looking for a cardiology doctor and was on his way to his first visit when things went south for him.

“He told me he was feeling pains in his chest and I tried to call code blue because I knew something was bad with him. His face was white as paper,” she says. “I knew he was feeling bad. He was so sick; I was afraid he was going to fall down.”

Ana held him up to keep him from falling, called for a code blue, and stuck with him until help arrived. After her shift she went to check on him because she was so worried about him. She found him in the Emergency Department and he thanked her for helping him.

“I thank God for putting me in the right place and I was glad I was able to help him,” Ana says.

Ana’s team has been training for what should be done in such emergency situation and she said she is grateful for that training because it helped her know what to do when she saw the man who needed her help.

Eddie Rodriguez, a supply supervisor who works with Ana, says Ana deserves credit for her tenacity in getting the young man help.

“Ana saw someone in need and she didn’t give up until he got the help he needed,” Eddie says. “We’re trained and taught how to get someone medical attention when it’s needed and Ana got to put that into practice. I’m sure that young man is glad she was ready and willing to help him.”
