Healthgrades, a physician and hospital rating database, has released its 2021 Specialty Excellence Awards. Nine Intermountain hospitals received 18 recognitions for service line performance, patient experience, or safety excellence.

To determine honorees, Healthgrades used a proprietary scorecard of patient outcomes and publicly available data to assess clinical outcomes for 34 procedures and conditions across 16 specialty areas at nearly 4,500 national hospitals. Information on methodology can be found on the Healthgrades website.

Here’s how Intermountain performed:

Outstanding Patient Experience Award

Cedar City, LDS, Logan Regional, Riverton, St. George Regional, and Utah Valley hospitals are among 417 facilities across the nation to receive 2021 Outstanding Patient Experience Awards, representing the top 15% of hospitals in the nation for patient experience.

Data is taken from the most recent 11 years of data from HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) patient survey from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Patient Safety Excellence Award

Alta View, LDS, TOSH, and Utah Valley hospitals are among 453 national facilities to receive Patient Safety Excellence recognitions. Honorees represent the top 10% in the nation for patient safety, with the lowest occurrences of 14 preventable patient safety events.

On average, inpatients at recipient hospitals were:

  • 50.3 % less like to experience a collapsed lung
  • 60% less likely to experience falls resulting in hip fracture*
  • 65.4% less likely to develop catheter-related bloodstream infections
  • 66.5% less likely to acquire pressure or bed sores

Specialty Excellence Awards

McKay-Dee, St. George Regional, and Utah Valley hospitals combined to receive eight specialty excellence awards in four service lines (orthopedic, spine, vascular surgeries, and joint replacement) for delivering superior patient outcomes.

According to Healthgrades, patients treated at specialty-excellence hospitals have lower risk of death or complication than those treated at the lowest-rated hospitals for the same procedure or condition. Healthgrades says if all hospitals performed at the same level as the top-rated hospitals, 218,785 lives could be saved and complications in 148,681 patients could be avoided.
