Rob Allen, senior vice president and chief operating officer, speaks at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Ground was broken last week for a new ambulatory surgery center on the northeast corner of the TOSH campus in Murray. When it opens in early 2023, the Intermountain Surgery Center, Murray – TOSH Campus will offer same-day orthopedic surgeries for hips, knees, and spine procedures in eight specialized operating rooms.

The new facility will include diagnostic and preventive procedures outside of the traditional hospital setting. This will make it more convenient for patients, as well as more affordable. The center will also specialize in set procedures, allowing for greater efficiencies and decreasing costs.

“I’m excited to work in a facility that will be streamlined with the latest technology and designed for specific surgeries,” says Ben Widmer, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and TOSH’s medical staff president. “This will also help lower the cost for some of our most common orthopedic surgeries.”

Studies have shown patients have better outcomes when they receive care closer to home. Most patients will return home shortly after surgery where they can continue their recovery, but those who need to transition further can stay overnight. The center’s unique recovery suites will allow patients to comfortably spend the night with some clinical care available as they prepare to return home.

Ground Breaking sized for Caregiver News

Intermountain and community leaders break ground for the new surgery center.

At the groundbreaking ceremony last week, Rob Allen, Intermountain’s senior vice president and chief operating officer, talked about Intermountain’s goal offer high quality care at a lower cost. He said cost is the biggest worry for many patients, even if they have insurance.

“We know the cost of care is high and this new facility will be a major step in making it more affordable,” Rob said. “This design and set up could help reduce the cost of surgery by 20 to 50% for common orthopedic procedures.”

Why is Intermountain investing in ambulatory surgical centers? Intermountain leaders see ambulatory surgery centers as one way to fulfil our vision to lower the cost of healthcare while maintaining high quality care. The new Intermountain Surgery Center at TOSH will join the system’s existing group of ambulatory surgery centers, including the McKay-Dee Surgery Center and Orthopedics in Ogden and Avenues Surgical Center in Salt Lake City. Intermountain-owned Saltzer Health also recently opened an ambulatory surgery center in Meridian, Idaho. More Intermountain Surgery Centers are coming soon, including in Park City, Saratoga Springs, St. George, and one opening later this year in Logan. Additional surgery centers will be announced as plans are solidified.
