Honoring our military veteran caregivers this Veterans Day

“Today, we say thank you to all veterans and honor the history of all that have served,” says Jeremy Cox, vice president of operations. “As a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, I’m always humbled by those that gave the ultimate sacrifice when called upon, and I am grateful to know that the service and sacrifices our veterans have given are held in deep regard by our community.”

Intermountain has more than 300 caregivers who’ve identified themselves as veterans, representing all branches of the U.S. military.

“Serving in the military is a special experience,” Jeremy says. “It teaches resilience, perseverance, and how to work as a team with people from many different backgrounds in the pursuit of a common purpose. Veterans have an inherent drive to serve. When a veteran goes into healthcare, it allows them to continue to fulfill this drive by serving their communities and their fellow veterans who come to Intermountain as patients.”

According to the U.S. Census, there are more than 470,000 veterans living in Utah, Nevada, and Idaho.

“Veterans often have unique health needs and experience higher rates of chronic pain, mental health issues, and other conditions that affect their civilian life,” Jeremy says. “It’s clear that Intermountain recognizes these challenges and that our caregivers are committed to meeting that need. I am very proud of working with such great people and knowing the service of our veterans is honored and held close to all of our hearts.”

Caregivers who are veterans, active service members, and military family members are welcome to join a roundtable hosted by the Military Caregiver Resource Group to share experiences and memories. The roundtable will be held on Microsoft Teams today, November 11, at noon to 1 p.m. MT. Meeting details are available on the Military CRG webpage. Veterans and active service members can also enjoy one free meal at any Intermountain cafeteria on either November 11 or November 12.
