It’s National ID Theft Week: Here’s how to protect your Intermountain and personal accounts

Thieves steal about nine million identities every year in the U.S. Protecting your identity is essential to safeguarding Intermountain’s information systems, patient information, and intellectual property. Properly securing your Intermountain sign-on information—user id and password—is integral to all caregivers’ jobs.

 What is identity theft?

Identity theft is a crime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of personal information to impersonate you, such as your social security number, driver’s license number, or your medical record. Thieves perpetrate ID theft through various means, including phishing, SMS texting (smishing), or scamming you on social media.

How can you protect yourself from identity theft?

  • Never share your Intermountain sign-on information with others.
  • Never use your Intermountain sign-on information for personal accounts.
  • Don’t open suspicious emails. If an email looks questionable, use the Phish Alert button in Outlook to report it.
  • Make sure you keep all essential records, such as medical records, social security numbers, and insurance cards, in a safe and secure place outside of public view.
  • Never throw paper documents containing personal information directly in the trash. Always use a shredder or shred box.
  • If you didn’t sign up for ID theft protection during benefits open enrollment in 2021, consider doing so in 2022.
