Mark Briesacher, MD, senior vice president and chief physician executive, announced in January his plans to leave Intermountain. The announcement accompanied several updates to the Intermountain Executive Leadership Team (ELT) that are being made as Intermountain plans to merge with SCL Health next month. Dr. Briesacher’s last day with Intermountain is Friday, March 4.

Dr. Briesacher dedicated 26 years to Intermountain. During his time here, he served as a general pediatric practice as a partner with Bryner Clinic and Holladay Pediatrics, he held several leadership and governance roles, and he led our system for six years as chief physician executive. Many clinicians and caregivers have shared how much Dr. Briesacher has influenced their own professional journeys by exemplifying human-centered, growth-focused, and virtuous leadership.

“I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to be an Intermountain caregiver, physician, and leader all these years,” Dr. Briesacher says. “I’m proud of the people who will be leading Intermountain, taking on new roles and responsibilities, and moving health and patient care beyond what we’ve ever imagined. You’re all in great hands.”

“Mark’s leadership leaves a lasting impact at Intermountain,” says Intermountain CEO Marc Harrison, MD. “He’s a renowned clinician and an unwavering advocate of providers, caregivers, and patients. This kind of dedication to people, behind every initiative and interaction we have, will continue to resonate throughout our organization.”

Dr. Briesacher has transitioned his responsibilities to Shannon Phillips, MD, and Robert Hoesch, MD, the current chief medical officers (CMOs) for the Utah-Idaho Region. Dr. Phillips, CMO for Community-based Care and president of the Intermountain Medical Group-Utah, and Dr. Hoesch, interim CMO for Specialty-Based Care, report to Sue Robel, RN, president of the Utah-Idaho Region.

Community-Based Care for the Utah-Idaho Region oversees the work of Intermountain Medical Group-Utah and clinic operations, Saltzer Health, Intermountain Homecare & Hospice, the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness, Primary Care and Community Care Service Lines, specialties based in clinics, and employment of our physicians and APPs. Specialty-Based Care for the Utah-Idaho Region oversees hospital operations, hospital medical staffs, Ops Lanes, specialties based on hospital campuses, TeleHealth, Clinical Shared Services, and the Office of Research and Academics.

JP Valin, MD, who is now the chief physician executive at SCL Health, will become chief clinical officer for Intermountain after the merger in April. Watch for more updates on system and region structures and reporting relationships as decisions are made through the SCL Health merger integration process.
