Intermountain will pay for you to become a CNA or patient care tech

CNA online sized for Caregiver News
[Caregivers who want to become CNAs start by taking a two-week online course. ]

Intermountain is providing opportunities for interested caregivers to be trained and then hired as a CNA or patient care tech (PCT). Caregivers attend a two-week CNA online course and onsite clinical rotations to prepare for the exam. Intermountain will cover the cost of the class. After completing the course, caregivers hired into a PCT role will need to pass the exam within 120 days after they are hired. The program is being piloted in facilities along the Wasatch Front in Utah and will be expanding to additional areas in the next few months.

Students in the CNA program learn how to accurately and compassionately act as a clinical support partner to assist the patient care team by performing a variety of tasks and procedures. They’re instructed by a licensed professional. Caregivers in this role should be skilled in basic patient care skills, including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, ambulating, comfort measures, assisting with lines and drains, and point of care testing.

Intermountain offers this opportunity to support caregivers’ growth as a continued step on their journey as a healthcare professional. Basic life support certification for healthcare providers is the minimum qualification needed to participate in the program.

Here’s how the program works:

To participate in the CNA program, caregivers may apply to a CNA student opening through Workday to be hired into a department. The department will sponsor the student, and this is where they’ll work as a PCT after completing the program.

  • The CNA student attends a two-week online course through Intermountain’s partner ccCNA and completes clinical rotations required to sit for exam.
  • CNA students will be paid $15 per hour while they’re completing the course and $16 per hour once they’re hired as a PCT.
  • The CNA student works a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, and nights and in various facilities, as needed.
  • The CNA student doesn’t need to pass the exam before the end of four weeks but will need to pass the exam within 120 days of moving into the PCT role.
  • On average, it takes between two to three weeks to complete the online program and requires two onsite days for skills.
