Prepare for winter and avoid injury by following these recommendations

Winter is almost upon us. While this is good news for ski season, it creates conditions that could cause injuries for caregivers. To stay safe and avoid injury as we move into winter, please commit to the recommendations below.

Winter SC

Before you leave for work:

  • Give yourself extra time to commute so you can drive carefully.
  • Put on winter weather shoes or boots.
  • Pack a workbag so you don’t have to carry things in your hands.
  • Be careful getting into your vehicle.

Once you park:

  • Be careful getting out of your vehicle.
  • Use cleared pathways — don’t cut across uncleared areas.
  • Walk as flat-footed as possible. Do the “penguin shuffle” if necessary.
  • Don’t rush, even if you might be a few minutes late.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings and look for patches of black ice.
  • Send your texts from inside your parked car or once you get into the building, not while you’re walking.
  • Keep your hands free and out of your pockets in case you slip.

When you’re in the building:

  • Watch for wet or slippery floors near entrances.
  • Report any black ice or unsafe conditions to your Facilities manager.
