Utah's New Medical Marvel Is Unveiled

Murray, Utah (9/26/2007) — More than 2,000 medical and community leaders from throughout the region gathered for the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the new Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, one of the most technologically-advanced and patient-focused hospitals in the nation.

Intermountain Medical Center will open to patients on Oct. 29, 2007.

Rising majestically on a 100-acre campus in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, the new Intermountain Medical Center campus represents the ultimate in modern healthcare: A brand-new facility that offers a careful and well-considered combination of high-touch and high-tech medical care.

Intermountain Medical Center is Intermountain Healthcare's new flagship hospital and will serve as a regional destination and trauma center for patients throughout the Intermountain West. It will provide the most advanced and comprehensive care – trauma and critical care medicine, organ transplantation, heart services, women and newborn services, cancer care – of any hospital in the region.

The new medial campus breaks from traditional hospital design of a single large hospital building and instead has spread patient services throughout five specialty hospitals on the campus to enhance patient care, access, and convenience.

The five specialty hospitals at Intermountain Medical Center provide a full spectrum of care for patients. Trauma and inpatients are seen in the J. L. Sorenson Patient Tower. Maternity patients are seen in the Carolyn Barnes Gardner Women and Newborn Center. Heart and pulmonary patients are seen in the J. L. Sorenson Heart and Lung Center. Outpatient cancer patients receive care in the Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer Center. Outpatient procedures are performed in the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Outpatient Care Center.

The centers on the Intermountain Medical Center campus each contain the latest in 21st century technology – such as robotic surgery, wireless communications, 3-D digital imaging, and advanced cancer treatment such as the Gamma Knife (only the second one in North America) – allowing the new medical center to stand among the most notable healthcare facilities anywhere in the world.

Hospital Services

Design Focuses on Healing. The design of the new medical center draws on the latest research, emphasizing connections to the natural world and to family as a way to speed healing and make patients comfortable. For example, studies have shown that views of nature and lots of natural light and soothing colors help patients remain calm and actually speed recovery.

The campus includes numerous gardens, water fountains, winding paths, and an outdoor labyrinth for meditation and reflection. Throughout the buildings, landscape paintings, plenty of natural light, materials such as natural stone and wood, and soft colors and textures create a sense of sky, greenery, and earth. To further promote a healing environment, all patient rooms are private and have sofa beds for loved ones who are encouraged to participate in their loved one's care. All patient rooms and staff areas have sweeping views of the Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges.
