Cancer Survivors Day

Cancer survivors will come together to commemorate a national day in their honor at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 4 at the Foremaster Education Auditorium, 1424 Foremaster Drive in St. George. Coach Scott Brumfield, Dixie State College, is the keynote speaker for the event.

Dixie State football entered a new decade and a new era in 2010 as former Rebel All-American Scott Brumfield was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach. Brumfield took the reins of the Red Storm program from Ron Haun, who announced his retirement following the end of the 2009 season. Brumfield, who served as offensive coordinator under Haun the past four seasons, was a two-time junior college All-American offensive lineman at Dixie in 1988-89, and was inducted into the NJCAA Football Hall of Fame in 1995. Two years ago, he had his #74 retired during DSC’s Hall of Fame Weekend celebration.

Dixie State’s football program was dealt a heavy blow before the start of the 2010 season as
first-year head football coach Scott Brumfield was diagnosed with cancer in late July. Brumfield checked himself into Dixie Regional Medical Center after complaining of back pain. During the evaluation period, doctors felt it was necessary to conduct additional tests. It was following those tests that Coach Brumfield and his family learned that lab results indicated a positive result for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Brumfield elected to remain in St. George to be treated at the Huntsman Intermountain Cancer Center. Chemotherapy treatment began immediately, which was followed by radiation treatments. Brumfield has successfully gone through treatment and will tell his cancer survivor story.

Dr. Derrick Haslem will emcee the event. Dr. Haslem is a St. George native who graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 2004. He began undergraduate studies at Dixie State College in 1995 and graduated from Southern Utah University in 2000. Dr. Haslem recently finished a medical oncology fellowship from the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute. In 2007 he completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Utah’s Hospitals and clinics. Dr. Haslem is certified from the American Board of Internal Medicine and board certified in Medical Oncology.
