Diabetes Health Fair

In Cache County and in Utah, six out of every 100 people are living with diabetes. More than 5,000 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day across the United States, and many others may not even be aware they have the disease.

To support American Diabetes Month in November, Logan Regional Hospital is joining with the American Diabetes Association to rally valley residents to take action in the fight to stop diabetes. Logan Regional is hosting a free diabetes health fair on Thursday, November 10, from noon to 2 p.m. in the hospital education classrooms. Anyone who has diabetes or who is interested in more information about the disease is invited to attend.

The fair includes several short presentations by diabetes educators and registered dietitians:

  • Choose a Health Plate, from 12 to 12:20 p.m. (repeated from 1 to 1:20 p.m.), by Natalie Haws, R.D., CDE
  • How Will Diabetes Education Help Me?, from 12:20-12:40 p.m. (repeated from 1:20 to 1:40 p.m.), by Vicky Tilley, R.N., CDE
  • Diabetes and Weight Loss, from 12:40 to 1 p.m. (repeated from 1:40 to 2 p.m.), by Ann Romero, R.D., M.S.

The fair also includes information booths on a range of topics with experts available to answer questions about diabetes.

“With appropriate self-management education, people with diabetes can delay or even prevent serious acute and chronic complications and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions,” said Vickie Tilley, registered nurse and diabetes educator at Logan Regional.

Patients at Logan Regional have many resources to educate them on how to manage diabetes and nutrition. The Nutrition Department provides counseling support groups, one-on-one sessions with a dietitian, monthly lunch and learn presentations, and various educational materials.

“Patients generally come in overwhelmed with all they have to do to manage their diabetes,” said Tilley. “But once we’ve had the opportunity to work with them and educate them, a light comes on and they realize they can overcome it.”
