Logan Regional opens new Dialysis Services Center

Logan Regional Hospital will open a new Dialysis Services Center to give patients more space and improved access to dialysis services. The new center begins serving patients Monday, January 9, and is located next to Logan Regional on 550 East 1400 North, medical suite K.

Until the opening of this center, dialysis patients have been receiving care in a small area on the third floor of Logan Regional Hospital. That space accommodated 12 dialysis stations. The new center is spacious and has 16 dialysis stations with privacy curtains and TVs in each station. Accessibility is another major benefit of the new center as patients will be able to park just outside the center’s entrance and directly access the treatment area, instead of having to travel to the third floor of the hospital. Dialysis Services Manager Jim Sherner said, “We have outgrown the space inside the hospital. Our new dialysis center will provide increased functionality for staff and for patients.”

Logan Regional Hospital’s dialysis team provides hemodialysis to both adult and pediatric patients. The Dialysis Services team includes a board-certified nephrologist specializing in kidney disease, registered nurses, specially trained technicians, social workers, and a certified diabetic and renal educator. The Dialysis Services team cares for patients six days per week, 12 hours per day. Most patients require dialysis treatment three to four hours per day at least three times weekly. “Our patients spend a lot of time here,” said Sherner, “so it was important to us to make the new facility aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.”

The Dialysis Services team also provides a Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) program and Social Services counseling. The CKD program helps patients who are on dialysis manage their disease as effectively as possible and helps those who are just entering loss of kidney function to stay off of dialysis as long as possible through good disease management.

With changes in federal regulations and reductions in reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid covering dialysis services, combined with high overhead and operating costs for these services, most hospitals lose money on dialysis services and many hospitals have cut back on or closed dialysis services. Intermountain Logan Regional Hospital is committed to providing vital healthcare services such as dialysis for Cache Valley residents in keeping with our nonprofit, community-service mission.

Professionals from HKS architects LTD., Jacobsen Construction, and Jess Bear Interior Design LLC., worked together on the new Logan Regional Dialysis Services Center to create a positive, inviting space that promotes healing. “The center is designed to provide patients with the feel of high-end hospitality expressed through open space, comforting colors, gorgeous landscape paintings, and a variety of textures and patterns,” said Jessica Bear, the center’s interior designer.
