Free screenings at Alta View Hospital's health fair

SANDY – As part of Alta View Hospital’s 30th anniversary, the hospital will host a free community health fair on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Everyone — including adults, teenagers, and children — is invited to come learn how to enhance their health, get free health screenings and see some of the medical services offered at Alta View Hospital, 9660 South 1300 East.

Free health screenings include free blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests and diabetes screenings. For accurate results, participants should fast for the cholesterol and diabetes screening tests. Also, there will be information available about breast care, diabetes, heart health, senior care, and more. A pharmacist will be on hand to help answer questions about medications.

Visitors will get an interactive look at Alta View’s surgery department. Participants will get a hands-on perspective of how surgical procedures are done, including total joint surgery, bone surgery, lap banding, and more. Alta View’s surgical staff will demonstrate some of the latest tools and equipment during a surgical procedure. Kids will be able to dress up in scrubs and perform a mock appendectomy, work under a surgical microscope, and even learn how to stitch.

The emergency department will host a teddy bear clinic. Kids can bring their hurt or sick stuffed animal and learn how to bandage them up and help them feel better. Families can also take part in interactive games and displays including a fun handwashing station that helps you see how many germs survive after hand washing.

“We’re excited for this year’s health fair, especially as we celebrate Alta View’s 30th anniversary,” says Kevin McEwan, the hospital’s nursing administrator. “We invite families to come see what we do at Alta View to help keep them healthy and safe. We’ll have free screenings and fun for the whole family.”

Visitors will also have an opportunity to sign up for the Healthy Sandy Partnership’s Slim Down/Shape Up 2012 program. The program encourages families to exercise, lose weight, and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot, just west of the main entrance for participants who would like to donate blood.

An Intermountain Life Flight helicopter will be on hand at the fair between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Also, representatives from Sandy City’s police and fire departments will provide safety information and a number of police and fire vehicles will be on display in the parking lot.
