Public Invited to Learn About Risks and Symptoms of Colon Cancer

SANDY, UT – A free community presentation explaining the risks and symptoms of colon cancer will be held on Wednesday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. in classroom B at Alta View Hospital, located at 9660 South 1300 East in Sandy.

Kyle Barnett, MD, a gastroenterologist at Alta View Hospital, will discuss colorectal cancer – the second leading cancer killer in the United States. The America Cancer Society estimates that there will be approximately 103,000 new cases of colon cancer in 2012. Because many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease more than 75 percent of those diagnosed with colon cancer could have been prevented with a colonoscopy.

Dr. Barnett will describe the risk factors and symptoms associated with colon cancer for men and women. During the lecture participants will learn the following about the risks and symptoms associated with colon cancer:

• Who is considered high risk?
• What symptoms are associated with colon cancer?
• What are the screening options?
• How you can prevent polyps from forming?
• Why colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer?

“You have the power to prevent colon cancer,” Dr. Barnett says. “But learning what you can do to prevent it by understanding the risks is paramount to catching this preventable cancer at an early age.”
