LDS Hospital ranked among the “Best Hospitals in America” by U.S. News

U.S. News & World Report has ranked LDS Hospital as one of the “Best Hospitals” in America — ranked 29th in Gynecology — and has recognized four Intermountain Healthcare hospitals for a number of their “high-performing” medical specialties.

Every year U.S. News publishes a list of the 50 best hospitals in America in 16 medical specialties. LDS is one of only 148 total hospitals to be listed in this year’s U.S. News national report — out of approximately 5,000 hospitals nationwide. And they’re one of only two hospitals in Utah to make this year’s list — Primary Children’s was the other hospital ranked nationally.

U.S. News’ annual ranking of the Best Hospitals in America also lists the best-performing hospitals in each state and in major metropolitan regions across the U.S. That listing, which includes 732 total hospitals, includes four Intermountain hospitals: LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo.

Here’s how Intermountain Healthcare’s hospitals were ranked in this year’s U.S. News listing:

NATIONAL LISTINGS

  • LDS Hospital is ranked 29th nationally in gynecology.

STATE/REGIONAL LISTINGS

“This is a wonderful achievement for LDS Hospital and a wonderful reflection of the skill and expertise of our employees and our physician partners,” says Jim Sheets, LDS Hospital administrator.  “This very prestigious ranking enhances our reputation for delivering extraordinary care — and underscores our success as a model healthcare system, which is a key part of Intermountain Healthcare’s mission.”

How does U.S. News rank the nation’s hospitals? Rankings are based on a hospital’s reputation (as measured by a survey of medical specialists), outcomes, volumes, service excellence ratings, mortality rates, and other measures related to patient care, including data collected by the federal government. Rankings in 12 of the 16 medical categories also require a hospital to meet least one of these criteria: Be a teaching hospital, be affiliated with a medical school, have at least 200 beds, or have at least 100 beds and offer at least four of eight specified medical technologies, such as a PET/CT scanner.
