RIVERTON –Intermountain Riverton Hospital will host a free community seminar on living with diabetes on Tuesday, August 28, from 6-7 p.m.

The seminar will be presented by Riverton Hospital diabetes educator, Heather Sandstrom, RPh, CDE, and will be held in the Riverton/Herriman conference room on the first floor of Riverton Hospital, 3741 West 12600 South.

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. Nearly 26 million children and adults in this country have diabetes. There are nearly two million cases of diabetes diagnosed in people 20 years and older every year.

“Lifestyle intervention programs aimed at diet, exercise, and weight loss can cut the rate of the progression of Type 2 diabetes nearly twice as much as treatment with medication alone,” says Sandstrom. “

A recent study by the National Institutes of Health sponsored Diabetes Prevention Program found that treatment with medication, along with lifestyle intervention that aimed for a seven percent loss in body weight and 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity activity, resulted in a much higher quality of life for people with diabetes. It also reduced the cost of medical care significantly.

The seminar will cover signs and symptoms of diabetes, medications, lifestyle modifications that can put people with diabetes on the path to a much healthier life. Get on track to better health by attending the Riverton Seminar.

Light refreshments will be served. No RSVP is required. For more details, please call Riverton Hospital at 801-285-2017.
