Intermountain Medical Center to Kick Off Breast Cancer Awareness With Event

MURRAY – In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, anyone who has been affected by breast cancer is invited to a special event to celebrate women and raise awareness about breast cancer with KUTV – Channel 2 news anchor and breast cancer survivor, Mary Nickles, this Friday, Sept. 28, at 9 am, at the Intermountain Medical Center Breast Care Center.

"A Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivors: Breakfast with Mary Nickles" is a kickoff to breast cancer awareness month in October. Nickles, longtime morning and noon news anchor at KUTV, was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year after having a mammogram at Intermountain Medical Center as part of a story to encourage women to take part in early detection of the disease. She will share her inspiring story about overcoming breast cancer, and how the disease has affected her family, at the second annual event.

Nickles will be joined at the event by breast care experts from the Intermountain Medical Center Breast Care Center, including medical director Brett Parkinson, MD, who will talk about advances in breast cancer detection and the importance of early detection and screening mammography.

This year, nearly 200,000 women, including about 1,000 women in Utah, will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, millions of women now survive breast cancer. Their lives, along with those who have passed away due to breast cancer, will be celebrated at the event.
