Epilepsy Center Gets Highest Possible Designation

Intermountain Medical Center’s Epilepsy Center has been named a Level 4 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers — which is the highest level of certification possible for an epilepsy program. The designation recognizes the program’s professional expertise and its ability to provide the highest level of medical and surgical evaluations and treatment for patients with epilepsy and other seizure disorders.

As part of the designation, the National Association of Epilepsy Centers will post information about Intermountain Medical Center’s epilepsy program and Level 4 designation on its website — and will send information about the program to U.S. News & World Report for use in its annual analysis of the nation’s best hospitals.

“This is super good news!” says Brad Zollinger, Director of Rehab Services and Neurosciences Coordinator for Intermountain Medical Center. “Nice work by all the members of our team! Years ago Dr. Tawnya Constantino had the vision that Intermountain Medical Center could take its place as one of the premier epilepsy centers in the country. This designation affirms her vision and corroborates the great deal of support she gets from our epilepsy team and the staff of the Intermountain Medical Center Neurosciences Institute since the program began in 2010.”

What services does the Epilepsy Center provide? Intermountain Medical Center’s program offers comprehensive diagnostic services, expert medication management, advanced lifestyle management resources, and specialized inpatient and outpatient treatment services. An estimated 3 million people have epilepsy in the United States, including roughly 27,000 in Utah. Approximately 10 percent of all Americans will suffer at least one seizure during their lives.

The Neuroscience Clinic and its team includes 14 employees and two neurologists who are fellowship-trained epileptologists: Tawnya Constantino, MD, who’s the program’s Medical Director, and Jeffrey Bigelow, MD. “Besides our doctors, our team includes highly trained EEG techs, advanced-practice nurses, medical assistants, nurses, and support personnel,” says Brad. “The Intermountain Medical Group closely collaborates with us to provide this service to our patients. Jan Groves is our Clinic Manager and Nan Nicponski, our Operations Officer, have facilitated the continued success of the program.”

The clinic is located on the eighth floor of Intermountain Medical Center’s south office building. Patients can make appointments or get more information by calling 801-507-9800 or toll-free at 877-276-3792, and by e-mailing imcneuroscience@imail.org.
