Intermountain Medical Center and EMS Crews to be Honored for Life-Saving Achievement

WHAT:

When it comes to treating a heart attack, minutes can be the difference between life and death.

It’s critical that heart attack patients get balloon therapy to clear blockages in their leading to the heart within 90 minutes, which is the national standard. Treating patients within that window is the goal of every hospital. But to do it consistently for three consecutive years is unheard of. Until now.

Thanks to an innovative treatment protocol and teamwork between several departments at Intermountain Medical Center and emergency medical service responders, the hospital has achieved a medical milestone: every heart attack patient transported and treated in the past three years has received life-saving balloon therapy within 90 minutes. Most recently, a patient’s door-to-balloon time was 28 minutes.

Hospital staff, along with EMS personnel from six agencies, will be honored on Thursday at 8 a.m. for this national achievement. EMS agencies include Gold Cross Ambulance, Murray City Fire, Park City Fire, Salt Lake City Fire, Sandy Fire and Unified Fire Authority.
