‘My Heart Challenge’ Mom Inspires 20 Other Utah Moms to ‘Get Out of the Stands and Into the Pool’ for Water Polo Match

WHAT:
For years, Tina Brown has sat in the stands to watch her high school children compete in water polo matches. But since joining the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute’s My Heart Challenge: Moms Edition last May, she has inspired more than 20 other Utah moms to get off the stands and into the water.

During the last seven weeks of the My Heart Challenge, the moms have taken time out of their schedule to learn how to swim, and how to play the game of water polo. With more than seven 90-minute practices behind them, the roles are reversed — the moms are in the pool while their high school children are in the stands to cheer them on.

“In our fourth year of the My Heart Challenge, we selected moms because of the example they set for their children, family, neighbors and community,” said Donald Lappé, MD, chief of cardiology at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Murray . “This game of water polo is a great example of getting your community involved in something that is not only heart healthy, but fun for everyone involved.”

Tina is one of 15 Utah moms competing in this year’s My Heart Challenge: Moms Edition.
