Eight Salt Lake Valley Families to Compete in 2016 My Heart Challenge to see who can Become Most Heart-healthy

WHAT:
Eight Salt Lake Valley families who have struggled to become more heart healthy will be competing in the 100-day My Heart Challenge: Family Edition that kicks off Thursday morning at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

The families will compete to determine which family can most improve their overall heart health and wellness during the 100-day competition, which is sponsored by the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute.

The annual challenge is a 100-day contest to help participants strengthen their heart health by improving their lifestyles and reducing their risk of developing heart disease. Participants will receive individual coaching and counseling from heart experts at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute – including exercise specialists, dietitians, counselors and cardiologists – to help them make positive, long-lasting healthy changes to their lives.

At the kickoff, the families will be introduced and then undergo health assessments and testing. Those same tests will be repeated at the end of the 100-day challenge to measure their accomplishments.

“The number of families impacted by heart disease is a growing problem in Utah and beyond,” said Donald Lappe, MD, chief of cardiology of the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute. “By making heart health a family focus, kids and parents can work together to support one another and enjoy the journey to better health for many years to come.”
