Robots to Break Ground at Alta View Hospital on Wednesday for Largest Expansion in Hospital History

WHAT:
To pave the way for the next generation of healthcare in Sandy, robots will break ground at Alta View Hospital for two four-story patient/clinic towers, expanding a campus that has served the residents in the southeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley for the last 34 years.

The robots were built and designed by students at four area high schools – Alta, Brighton, Jordan and Juan Diego. They were challenged by Alta View Hospital leaders to build a robot to take the administrator’s place and break the ground for them.

The groundbreaking kicks off the largest investment and improvement project in Alta View Hospital’s history and will impact most of the hospital’s major clinical departments over the next three years. The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2019.

The use of robots in the groundbreaking represents the fact that Alta View is here to set the pace for health care by using technology to improve the patient experience.

Alta View Hospital is an innovation center and test site in partnership with Intermountain Healthcare’s Transformation Lab and is incorporating new automated technologies to improve patient care at the bedside. Some of those technologies include digital whiteboards with touch screen monitors and real time location systems that help tract assets, vehicles and other objects in real time.

"With this construction project, we’re laying the foundation to better serve the families in our community,” said Bryan Johnson, Alta View Hospital’s administrator. "By updating inpatient rooms, maternity rooms, state-of-the-art surgical suites, and more, we’re preparing for the next three generations of families who will become part of the Alta View and Intermountain Healthcare families."

"This is a great step forward for the campus, and the next chapter in our story,” said Johnson. “From the outside you can look at our campus and see the different decades of architecture, from the 1980s with the original hospital, the 90s for the Women’s Center, and finally the 21st century with the Specialty Center.”
