Intermountain Healthcare Names Susan Robel as New Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Nursing Executive

Intermountain Healthcare has named Susan Robel as senior vice president of clinical operations and chief nursing executive for the health system.

Robel comes to Intermountain from Geisinger Health, which is another of the country’s top-rated health systems. During her 34-year career at Geisinger, Robel led efforts to standardize nursing practices and developed the Geisinger Nursing Institute. She also helped guide the organization’s move toward value-based care, which is a major focus at Intermountain.

“Sue has extensive experience as a clinical executive and has been a leading voice for clinicians, patients, and the community at Geisinger, where she built a career for 34 years. She brings the unique experience of helping Geisinger move toward value-based care in a matrixed organization,” said Marc Harrison, MD, president and chief executive officer of Intermountain Healthcare.

In her new role at Intermountain, Robel will focus on ensuring that nursing caregivers are partnering with their colleagues to bring the highest quality, lowest cost care to patients. This means that caregivers have the training and education necessary to provide the highest quality care to patients throughout Intermountain. She will also partner with her team to oversee clinical operations throughout the Intermountain system.

“Patient care provided outside of the hospital is becoming extremely important in the process of delivering healthcare,” said Robel. “It’s making us think differently on how we allocate resources. Having nurses and advance practice practitioners as part of that team is vital to achieving that.”

In her decades in the healthcare industry Robel knew of Intermountain through its reputation as a quality leader and innovator in delivering healthcare. 

“Intermountain’s reputation is that everything they do is geared towards the mission of making things better for the community, patients, and caregivers,” said Robel. “I really feel I can make a difference, and that’s what drove me to join the Intermountain team.”

Robel earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Penn State University, and a master’s degree in health administration from Wilkes University. She is currently a doctoral candidate in Business Administration at Walden University. She was a 2014 Nightingale Award Finalist in Nursing Administration in Pennsylvania.
