Intermountain Park City Hospital to Host Community Event to Raise Awareness That Heart Disease Is Leading Killer for Women – And Positive Things Women Can Do to Reduce Their Risk

Dr. Annabelle Santos Volgman, a nationally recognized cardiologist and expert in women’s heart health, will be the featured presenter at Intermountain Park City Hospital’s “Heart Smart Soirée: A Night to Celebrate Women’s Heart Health” on Wednesday, Feb. 28. 

The special Heart Month event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s Blair Education Center, located at 900 Round Valley Drive in Park City. The event is free but registration is required.

The event aims to raise awareness that heart disease is the leading killer of women – more than all cancer combined – but there are positive things women can do proactively to reduce their risk of heart disease. 

According to the American Heart Association: 

• Heart disease kills one in three women
• Nearly 45% of women ages 20+ are living with some form of cardiovascular disease.
• Less than 50% of women entering pregnancy in the U.S. have optimal cardiovascular health.
• Women experience unique life stages, such as pregnancy and menopause, that can put them at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

Women are invited to wear red to the event and join in celebrating women’s heart health with live music, prize drawings, a heart-themed photo booth, information tables, free blood pressure screenings and a chance for women to print their own work of art as a memento of the evening. 

Heart healthy hors d’oeuvres and mini desserts prepared by Intermountain chefs will be offered.

Dr. Volgman is the co-founder and medical director of the Rush Heart Center for Women, the first heart program in Chicago devoted exclusively to women that opened in 2003. 

A fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, Dr. Volgman has dedicated her career to helping women and their families lead healthier lives through prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Three Intermountain Park City Hospital physicians will also speak at the event: Austin Smith, MD, medical director of emergency medicine; Michael B. Chen, MD, medical director of OB/GYN; and Amanda Donohue, DO, cardiology.
