Offering integrated behavioral health services through your primary care provider

Our integrated, team-based service models work in harmony so that you get a customized care plan that addresses your unique needs.

MHI is Intermountain Health’s way of providing mental health treatment right in your primary care office – the right level of care, when you need it, in a place you already know well: your doctor’s office.

MHI focuses on providing mental health care for the whole person, in a setting where most patients are already comfortable (like their doctor’s office). We understand that often, mental health can change over time – conditions may come and go or feel worse at times. In many cases, MHI offers greater flexibility, better availability, and the benefit of team-based care and collaboration with your doctor and other members of your primary care team.

MHI therapists are licensed psychologists, social workers, or other mental health therapists who provide brief episodes of therapy for a broad variety of mental health conditions. They also provide brief assessments, screening, and diagnosis services, as well as behavior change visits that focus on improving overall health and specific medical conditions.

In the MHI program, therapy patients are allowed to return for additional brief episodes of care to address new issues or touch up on old skills without having to “start from scratch” with a new provider or clinic.

MHI psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners are specially trained to provide mental health diagnosis, consultation, and medication management services for a variety of mental health concerns.

Due to the brief nature of MHI services, not all diagnoses or patients are appropriate for the MHI program.

How does MHI work?

Patients may call to schedule a visit with an MHI provider on their own or can be referred by their medical provider. To be seen by an MHI provider, you must already be established with a primary care provider at that clinic.

On your first visit, your therapist or psychiatrist will conduct a mental health interview to make sure they understand your concerns and any important information that may be relevant to your current mental health. Your clinician will help determine whether MHI is a good fit. If appropriate, they will work with you to create a treatment plan. If MHI is not the right fit, your clinician will help direct you to appropriate care.

At subsequent visits, your clinician will continue to monitor your progress and work toward your treatment goals. For medication services, you can expect to have 4-6 follow up visits, or until your medication is stable, at which time your primary care physician will take over your mental health medications. For therapy services, your therapist will discuss with you what might be an appropriate number of visits for your condition, and which type of psychotherapy will be most effective for you.

What conditions does MHI treat?

MHI clinicians, including both therapists and psychiatrists, can treat a broad range of mental health concerns, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety and Panic
  • Attention Deficit
