A new approach to treating advanced melanoma

Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy is an advanced form of adoptive cell therapy that uses a patient's own immune cells to help target melanoma. For people with advanced, metastatic, or refractory melanoma, personalized TIL therapy may provide a new treatment option when standard therapies have not worked as expected. Intermountain offers expert evaluation, coordinated care, and access to innovative TIL therapies for patients throughout Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Colorado, and Montana.

How Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocyte Therapy works

TIL therapy is a type of adoptive cell therapy that uses immune cells already present within a tumor. Those cells are collected, expanded in a laboratory, and then returned to the body to help fight cancer.

A small portion of the tumor is removed so specialists can identify tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, or TILs. These naturally occurring immune cells are selected for treatment.
The collected TILs are multiplied in a specialized laboratory to create millions of cancer-fighting immune cells.
Before the TIL infusion, patients receive preparatory treatments designed to help the expanded immune cells work effectively.
The expanded TILs are infused back into your body, where they can recognize and target melanoma cells.
Your care team closely monitors treatment response, recovery, and long-term follow-up.

Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy is a type of adoptive cell therapy that uses immune cells collected from a patient's tumor. Those cells are expanded in a laboratory and infused back into the body to help fight cancer. It is most often used for patients with advanced melanoma.
Patients with advanced, metastatic, or refractory melanoma may be candidates for TIL therapy. Eligibility depends on several medical factors and requires evaluation by a cancer specialist. We can help determine whether this treatment may be appropriate for you.
TIL therapy is a form of cellular immunotherapy. Unlike some immunotherapies that use medications to stimulate the immune system, TIL therapy uses a patient's own tumor-fighting immune cells.
Today, TIL therapy is most commonly used for advanced melanoma. Researchers continue to study its potential in other solid tumors through ongoing clinical research and treatment programs.
After immune cells are expanded in a laboratory, they are infused back into the patient's bloodstream. The care team monitors patients closely throughout treatment and recovery.
Some patients may qualify for clinical trials studying innovative or next-generation TIL therapies. A specialist can discuss available options and whether participation may be appropriate.
