Intermountain to add more self-serve COVID-19 testing locations and simplify testing process

COVID self testing image sized for caregiver news

Intermountain is opening more self-serve COVID-19 testing locations to support the growing needs of our communities for individuals with or without symptoms. It will also allow individuals to choose the COVID-19 testing experience that works best for them.

Patients should pick a care or testing opportunity based on their individual needs. Testing options include:

  1. See a provider in a clinic, InstaCare, KidsCare, or Connect Care, or in an emergency department if severely ill or experiencing an emergent issue.
  2. Select a self-serve saliva PCR testing location for mild illness, COVID-19 close contact, travel, employment, school, or other non-urgent access needs.

All locations will be branded as “self-serve” COVID-19 testing locations. Only saliva samples will be available at these locations. Patients should know whether they can produce enough saliva for the test before arriving at a self-serve location.

Caregiver access to COVID-19 testing

A caregiver survey, coming soon, will also introduce a self-serve option for caregivers while still being connected to Employee Health assistance dealing with COVID-19 and COVID-19 exposures.

A new simplified process has been designed to make accessing a test easier for caregivers and community members. The new experience is built around a self-serve digital online experience as the primary way to access a saliva-PCR test for nonurgent needs. Other access points support more urgent and emergency care needs and testing as part of care delivery.

In-clinic

Patients should seek care in person at any time when they’re ill or concerned about their or their family’s health. Individuals should also choose this experience if they know, in advance, that a saliva-PCR test won't work for them. In-clinic experiences are as follows:

  • Primary care and pediatric clinic visit (scheduled and same-day appointments):
    • An evaluation for COVID-19 or other illness will occur and, if needed, a test for COVID-19 will be ordered.
    • Patients can also schedule to have a COVID-19 vaccination and other vaccinations/immunizations with a provider.
    • Find a doctor.
  • InstaCare and KidsCare:
    • Patients who are moderately ill, with symptoms such as being short of breath when walking, should be evaluated in person so early treatments can be started if needed.
    • Patients who needed to be evaluated quickly should choose to be seen at an InstaCare or KidsCare location.
    • No appointment is needed, and there may be wait times. More urgent patients will be seen first.
    • Find an InstaCare location or a KidsCare location.
  • Emergency department:
    • Individuals with immediate or life-threatening medical emergencies should go to the nearest emergency department or call 911.
    • No appointment is needed, and there may be wait times. Patients with the most critical or serious issues will be seen first.
    • Find an emergency department.

Video or telephone visit with a provider:

This option can be chosen whenever the patient is ill or concerned about their or their family’s health. The patient will visit the provider by video or telephone to understand whether to be seen by a provider or to visit a self-serve location for their COVID-19 test.

  • Primary care provider: Requires an appointment.
    • The provider may route the patient to their clinic for an in-clinic COVID-19 test or may send the patient to use the self-serve digital service (described below) to access a COVID-19 test, depending on the type of test needed and turnaround of test results.
  • Connect Care (video only): Available anytime, anywhere. Can be used for quick evaluation, when ill or concerned about your health, or when no appointments are available with a provider.
    • The Connect Care team may route the patient to an InstaCare for an in-clinic COVID-19 test, to an Intermountain self-serve digital service, or may offer information about the more than 200 other testing options offered by other testing providers in the community.

    Self-serve digital service

This option allows the individual to use an electronic tool to self-screen and have access to a COVID-19 test. Telephone support for this digital experience is available and is offered by our MyHealth+ online services (OLS) team. If a patient needs a swab-collection method, they must choose an in-clinic experience.

  • Self-screen using the online digital tool. Order a test starting August 30.
  • The only test available at these locations is a saliva-PCR test. Caregivers aren’t present at these self-service locations.
  • A list of the locations for patients to choose from will be provided after using the tool.
  • Testing prior to a procedure

This approach supports our COVID-19 testing protocols for those receiving a procedure at an Intermountain facility.

  • Pre-procedure staff will help patients know when they need a test and will provide them with directions on where to go to get a COVID-19 test. Pre-procedure staff will help the patient "know before they go" whether they should be directed to a self-serve or in-clinic location.
    • Patients will need to access the self-serve locations. This option should serve more than 98% of patients having a procedure.
    • If the patient can’t provide a saliva sample, additional instructions will be provided on where to receive an in person COVID-19 test.
  • How to get test results

    • Results will be digitally available in MyHealth+.When using the self-serve option, patients won’t receive a call from Intermountain with their results.
    • The local health department or primary care providers may call positive patients.
    • Patients who provide their mobile phone number will receive a text message when their results are ready. The online survey requires a mobile telephone number.
    • The MyHealth+ digital support team is available to assist getting access to results.

Digital support is provided by the My Health+ support team. They can be reached at 385-297-6430. Their service hours are:

    • Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Closed Sunday
