Research and Professional Experience

Dr. Afshar has participated in numerous studies performed at Intermountain Medical Center as well as with the UTAH Transplant Consortium in the fields of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), heart transplantation, and chronic heart failure.

Currently, he is the Intermountain site principal investigator for a Phase 2 drug study in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

In the past, Dr. Afshar has published a systemic review of the utility of blood cultures in the setting of community-acquired pneumonia, as well as the effect of the new house staff training hours on patient safety and staff satisfaction.

Current Research Projects

  • Perhexiline Drug Trial: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of perhexiline on exercise performance (efficacy) and safety in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and moderate-to-severe heart failure following dosing for 16 weeks.
