Interventional Cardiology

We're here to provide minimally invasive care for your child's congenital heart conditions.

The interventional cardiology program at Intermountain Children's Health is one of the largest in the Mountain West. We utilize the latest technology and minimally invasive approaches to care, treating congenital heart issues such as holes in the heart and valve problems. These catheterization procedures often replace the need for open-heart surgery, allowing your child to recover quickly with minimal scarring. Our goal is to keep your child happy and healthy, while providing the personal care they need.

Our services

Cardiac catheterization can be used to identify or treat a problem with the heart or blood vessels. It can also be used to evaluate how your child is doing after another condition or procedure, like a heart transplant. With a cardiac catheterization, a doctor inserts a long, flexible tube called a catheter into a blood vessel and uses it to perform a procedure in a less invasive manner.

Possible procedures include:

  • Diagnostic catheterization
  • Angiography
  • Balloon valvuloplasty or balloon angioplasty
  • Closing a septal defect
  • Balloon atrial septostomy
  • Occlusion of blood vessels
  • Stent placement
  • Heart biopsy
