History
LDS Hospital has a long tradition of quality healthcare dating back to 1905. It has since grown to a 220-bed, elite, full-service community hospital serving northern Salt Lake, southern Davis counties, and west through Tooele county to the Nevada state line.
1905 - W. H. Groves donated enough money to purchase the land that LDS Hospital was built on. Together with donations from the LDS Church, the hospital was completed in 1905 and opened as the W.H. Groves LDS Hospital. It had a nursing school and was an important training ground for many physicians.
1913 and 1929 - Expansion of the original hospital.
1944 - LDS Hospital established their first surgical and medical residencies in partnership with The University of Utah.
1954 - World’s first medical computer developed at LDS Hospital and the first Newborn Intensive Care Unit is created.
1956 - Utah’s first hospital volunteer auxiliary is created.
1974 - Intermountain Healthcare takes over operation of the LDS Church’s 15 hospitals and commits to operate them as a nonprofit entity, serving the community’s needs.
1978 - Life Flight Air Ambulance service created at LDS Hospital.
1979 - First bone marrow transplant performed at LDS Hospital.
1983 - First solid organ transplant performed at LDS Hospital.
1984 - A new patient tower is built on the site, replacing the original LDS Hospital from 1905.
1985 - First heart transplant performed at LDS Hospital.
1993 - First artificial heart implant performed at LDS Hospital.
2005 - LDS Hospital celebrates 100 years in the community.

Who can Volunteer?
If you are over 18 and enjoy helping people, there is a place for you at LDS Hospital. Volunteer shifts are four hours, once a week, with an asked commitment of at least six months.

Junior Volunteers
The Junior Volunteer Program provides an excellent opportunity for young people between the ages of 14 and 17 to give service, meet people, learn new skills, and gain valuable experience in a hospital environment. Applicants must be 14 years of age or older as of June 1st. Program runs each summer, beginning in June and ending in August. Opportunities are available online beginning in March, with a deadline in April. Must commit to one four-hour shift in the same department for the program's 10 weeks.
