The DIEP breast reconstruction represents one of the most advanced forms of breast reconstruction and often creates a more natural and realistic result. Following this type of procedure, additional reconstructive surgery will be required to create a nipple and areola (the dark skin around the nipple).

DIEF_flap

DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap reconstruction restores the breast using skin and fatty tissue from the lower abdomen below the level of the belly button, and blood vessels from under the abdominal muscles, which effectively results in a "tummy tuck" as well. While it leaves a minor abdominal scar, it improves the abdominal contour and preserves full abdominal strength because the muscle is left in place and is not sacrificed. As a result, there is rarely the need for adding mesh to reconstruct the abdomen.

The DIEP flap procedure is ideal for women with an active lifestyle as well as for those who have undergone double mastectomy who don’t want implant-based reconstruction.
