Training for careers at Intermountain Health
Intermountain Health offers several paths to become certified as a Surgical Technologist. All our programs are either paid positions or offer full coverage for tuition and are geared for working adults.
After completing one of our training programs, you will be qualified to work in one of our operating rooms and will be prepared to sit for the national certification test, called the Technologist in Surgery-Certified (TS-NCCT).
A role as a surgical technologist offers a rewarding, hands-on experience assisting with surgeries , a path for advancement, a family-sustaining wage and full benefits, and can be a great stepping stone to further your career in medicine.
Please be aware that our programs require on-site training, which is only currently being offered in Utah (we’re working on expanding to other states, but we’re not quite there yet!). Several, but not all, of our programs are only open to current employees. Apprenticeships
Apprentices are full-time Intermountain Health employees during their program and receive pay and full benefits. This earn while you learn opportunity is open to employees and non-employees.
Intermountain Health Surgical Technology Apprenticeship Program (Taught at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City)
- Upon completion of the 10–11-month program, you will be qualified to work in our ORs and become a Technologist in Surgery-Certified.
- This program option will teach and train the individual to learn how to pass a national certification test called a Technologist in Surgery-Certified (TS-C NCCT) https://www.ncctinc.com/certifications/tsc.
- Classes will be held at LDS Hospital & clinical rotations offered in Salt Lake County operating rooms.
- Classwork/Lab- Monday- Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (1st six months) at 36 hours/week
- Externship/Hands on training- Assigned training at local hospitals 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Monday- Friday) = 40 hours/week (3 months)
- Program classes will start early January and mid-June each year (15 positions per class).
What Intermountain Health Is Offering:
- You will be paid on-the-job for classwork & clinical externship rotations.
- No fees or tuition for classes or training.
- Job placement after graduation with Intermountain.
- Full-time pay starts at $20.30/hour for 36 hours week (includes benefits). Compensation increases to $21.11/hour at mid-point of class.
Job Requirements to Apply:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Current CPR/BLS card from the American Heart Association.
- During the program, apprentices will be full-time Intermountain Health employees, working 36 hours per week (6 + months). Externship (training in the OR) will increase to 40 hours per week (3 + months).
- 9- 11-month classwork/training commitment. (Commitment to attend class/lab/externship for 9-11 months with no vacation). Time off would be for sick call.
- 1-year commitment to work for Intermountain after the training at hospitals that have the greatest needs
- Currently, Intermountain Medical Center, LDS Hospital, Primary Children’s, Utah Valley, and or Park City
- Apprentices are expected to adhere to Intermountain Health performance and attendance standards.

Intermountain Health/Salt Lake Community College Apprenticeship Program (Taught at West Jordan SLCC Campus)
- Intermountain is sponsoring students that are pursuing a career in surgical technology at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and to obtain an associate degree.
- Intermountain Health will sponsor 9 Surgical Technologist apprentices for August 20, 2024, which will require a formal job application and the students will be paid as an employee of Intermountain Health.
- Upon completion of the 18-24-month program, the employee/student will graduate with an Associate degree and be qualified to work in Intermountain Health’s operating rooms and become a Certified Surgical Technologist.
- The program will require full-time attendance at the college as a student and require routine check-ins with a supervisor from Intermountain Health.
- Classes will be held at West Jordan & clinical rotations offered in Salt Lake County operating rooms.
- To be eligible to apply for this job opportunity with Intermountain Health, the student needs to complete all SLCC’s Surgical Technology Program prerequisites to apply to their program.
What Intermountain Health Is Offering:
- You will be paid to go to school (classwork & clinical rotations).
- Paid tuition (In-State-Utah) for the three Surgical Technology program semesters (42 credit hours) in the Surgical Technology College Program.
- The apprenticeship job will not pay for school application fees, prerequisite classes (up to 27 credit hours), student fees, and or books.
- Job placement after graduation with Intermountain.
- Full-time pay starts at $20.30/hour for __ (hours to be determined) hours week (includes benefits). Compensation increases to $21.11/hour at mid-point of class.
Job Requirements to Apply:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
- Current CPR/BLS card from the American Heart Association.
- Utah residency established.
- Complete all SLCC’s prerequisite steps and be eligible to apply for the Surgical Technology Program.
- 1-year commitment to work for Intermountain after the training at hospitals that have the greatest needs
- Currently, Intermountain Medical Center, LDS Hospital, Primary Children’s, or Utah Valley Hospital.
- The apprenticeship job application will only be sent to students that SLCC reports have completed all their program application steps and prerequisite classes.

- Take all prerequisite courses they require.

- Coordinate with them to enroll in the appropriate prerequisite courses.
- When Danielle reports to Intermountain Health that you have completed the steps to apply for the surgical tech program, you will be sent a job application to fill out (Between Feb - May 2024).

Tuition-Covered Training Programs

Davis Technical College- Kaysville, Utah

- Program length 16-20 months, self-paced, classroom instruction. Great option for students that need to work and go to school.
- 18 hours minimum per week
- Foundation course: Day and afternoon class options
- Core surgical courses: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 11:00 am or 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm.
- Program starts four times per year, typically starting in January, March, June, and September.
Mountainland Technical College- Lehi & Provo, Utah

Utah Tech University- St. George, Utah
