What to expect

Once your child receives a diagnosis, they will be scheduled for an appointment in the diabetes clinic. Here's what you can expect during your visit:

After diagnosis, you'll attend your first introductory class where you’ll learn about diabetes and treatment. You'll also meet one-on-one with members of the team that will be helping you and your child through this process.

Your first clinic visit will be scheduled after your child's diagnosis. During this appointment you'll be introduced to your provider, a social worker, and a diabetes educator. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and meet your care team.

Your child will be scheduled for regular follow-up appointments. Our goal is to keep track of their health, making sure they’re feeling their best.

Back to school with diabetes

All schools require a Diabetes Medical Management Order (DMMO). This comes from your provider and has care instructions for managing your child's diabetes at school.

To get this done, please contact your provider with the school's name and fax number. It's best to do this 2 to 4 weeks before the school year starts. This helps ensure that everything is set up on time and your child receives the care they need at school.

Support & resources

In and out of our hospitals and clinics, we are here to provide you support that matters.

Our diabetes support group works with parents who are in the first couple years of receiving their child’s diagnosis. We meet to provide tips, support, education, and encouragement of independency while managing chronic conditions. Our groups will have a provider, phycologist, and social worker present to help you navigate your questions and concerns.

We are also looking to expand our program to include children and adolescents.

If you are interested in participating, please contact any of our social workers at:

  • 801-662-6354 (SLC)
  • 801-662-6339 (SLC)
  • 385-531-3527 (Lehi)

Our clinical social workers are here to support you and your family. By assessing individual needs, they can help develop plans, address behavioral health concerns, advocate on your behalf, assist with coordinating and documentation, and teach skills to support empowerment and prevention.

Every year in November, we host an awards night that honors and spotlights individuals who have lived with diabetes for 10, 25, 50 and even 75 years.

If you are interested in participating, please talk to one of our social workers. We are unable to nominate children 18 years or younger.

Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the event.
