Residency Program
St. George Regional Hospital's PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on doctor of pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, becoming eligible for board certification and PGY2 pharmacy residency training.
The PGY1 pharmacy residency at St. George Regional Hospital was created in 2020 and is an ASHP-accredited program that expands upon the services provided throughout Intermountain Health's other PGY1 sites. It maintains the same standards and program requirements with some adaptation as needed due to location. Opportunities to complete learning experiences at other Intermountain residency sites will be available, based on resident interest and rotation availability.
Pharmacy Services
The pharmacy department at St. George Regional Hospital consists of 31 pharmacists working together in a decentralized model to ensure patient safety, provide excellent customer service and promote optimal patient outcomes. Our pharmacists come from a wide array of backgrounds with about one-third being board certified and residency trained. Pharmacists serve on many local and system-wide committees. They also serve as preceptors for several colleges of pharmacy accepting students in many different practice areas. Pharmacy clinical services have grown significantly in recent years, including new or expanded services in the OR, ED, infectious disease, anticoagulation clinic and oncology clinic.
Residency Completion Requirements

Rotations
Click here for a listing of PGY1 Pharmacy rotations; note that additional rotations are available upon request. Residents are allowed to complete rotations anywhere throughout Intermountain Health’s Utah practice sites.
Staffing
Residents are required to staff 32 hours per month (every-other-weekend shifts) during their residency year. The residents will also staff one major holiday. Resident staffing will start centralized, but then progress to all units over the year. During orientation, we train residents on the floors that they will be staffing during their residency year.
After Completing This Program
Pharmacists completing this residency program will be competent and confident practitioners of direct patient care in multiple practice and patient care environments. They will be able to identify and resolve potential and actual patient-specific, drug-related problems and will be accountable for achieving optimal drug therapy outcomes as members of a healthcare team.
These pharmacists will become skilled educators, both verbally and in writing, of health care professionals, students, patients and the community. They will demonstrate professional maturity by independently following a personal philosophy of practice, monitoring their own performance, exhibiting commitment to the profession and exercising leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system.
As highly trained professionals, these pharmacists will be well prepared to compete in today's job market.
