The academic year consists of thirteen four-week rotation blocks. The first block starts on June 24 and the last block end on June 23. Upper level residents are University of Utah residents from each respective department (surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, etc.); Transitional Year interns participate in resident education with the categorical residents in each rotation.
Required Rotations with Hospital Call
Internal Medicine (2 blocks; 2 weeks of Night Float)
Interns work with a team consisting of an attending physician, an upper level internal medicine resident, two interns and 1-2 medical students. Interns will care for a diverse patient population with a wide variety of medical diagnoses.
General Surgery (1 block)
Interns care for patients on the general surgery, acute care surgery, surgical oncology and colorectal surgery services. Each team consists of faculty from the Department of Surgery, 2-3 general surgery residents, medical students. There is a mix of emergent and elective cases.
Shock Trauma ICU (2 blocks)
The critical care experience takes place in the Shock Trauma ICU, which cares for medical, surgical and trauma patients. The Transitional Year interns are supervised by faculty from the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, as well as a Pulmonary and Critical Care fellow. The rotation offers a fully integrated, multi-disciplinary educational rounding process on all teaching patients in the unit.
Required Rotations without Hospital Call
Emergency Medicine (1 block)
The Emergency Department at Intermountain Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma, Stroke and STEMI receiving center and is the busiest emergency department in the Intermountain West. The interns are supervised by Emergency Medicine attendings.
Ambulatory Clinic (1 block)
The ambulatory clinic experience takes place in Intermountain Medical Center’s Internal Medicine teaching clinic. The interns work directly with faculty from the Department of Medicine to care for a diverse patient population. The clinic sees general medicine, thrombosis and rheumatology sub-specialty patients.
Community Health (1 block)
The community health rotation provides a comprehensive educational experience in social determinants of health. Interns will spend clinical time in one of Intermountain’s community access clinics, work on a project of their choosing to improve the health of the community and learn about health advocacy.
Selectives (2 blocks)
Interns will choose from a list of customized direct care clinical experiences that align with their matched advanced residency.
Elective Rotations
Electives (3 blocks)
Electives are available within the institution in nearly all specialties and sub-specialties. Transitional Year interns may design their own elective experiences within the institution or at another institution subject to approval by the program director. There are multiple research elective opportunities which may be tailored to the intern’s research interests. There is no competition for scheduling within the institution.
